3. Common Types of Outsourced Dental Lab Work in Georgia

Crown & Bridge, dental implants, dentures & partials, and cosmetic cases are the most common cases Georgia dentists outsource. The state’s diverse demographic makeup includes an ever-expanding population of working-age families and retirees, adults beginning to receive dental services under Medicaid, increased use of implants, and a culturally diverse population with very high expectations of an esthetic appearance.

1) Type 1: Crown & Bridge

Atlanta and other cities, such as Savannah, Augusta, and Columbus, are becoming top choices for young professionals and families who are moving to Georgia, the fastest-growing state in the nation. This means that there is a high demand for ongoing restorative procedures, most notably crown & bridge, which is by far the most common procedure sent out of the majority of Georgia practices. Case volume continues to increase as well with the addition of comprehensive dental services for adults (prosthodontic care) to Georgia Medicaid as of July 2024.

Questions to ask your supplier:

  • Is the supplier able to manage large numbers of routine restoration projects – for example crowns, PFM restorations – within the stipulated time frame?
  • Need extra capacity for the high demand periods of the year (Insurance year-end or back to school)?

2) Type 2: Implant‑Supported Restorations

The dental implants and restorations market in Georgia has been growing steadily in the last few years, and, as per the feedback from the customers, there is a growing demand for implant-supported restorations.

One of the first things to check with any dental lab is whether or not they are compatible with your dental implant system. Most of the main implant systems used in clinical practice are supported by most of the professional laboratories today. For instance, at BestoDental we work with all the major implant brands like Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Hiossen, METÈ and many other popular brands.

Passive and accurate fit is dependent on implant system compatibility. Without the correct components, no restoration, despite its good design, can be properly seated. When submitting each case to your laboratory to provide you with an accurate and efficient restoration, we strongly recommend that you include the following details about the implant system, platform, size, and model you are restoring. Giving all the information in advance reduces the “wait and hear” cycle and avoids unnecessary communication fluctuations.

Questions to ask your supplier:

  • Straumann is my implant system. Are you able to correctly match all necessary parts?
  • How long does it take you to do a single implant crown?
  • If anything goes wrong while making will you call me before going on?

If you want to learn how to outsource implant restorations, we have written a dedicated article, Dental Implant Restoration Outsourcing Guide: Price, Workflow & Lab Selection.

3) Type 3: Dentures & Partials

About 1.76 million people age 65 and older live in Georgia, representing 15.8% of the state’s population. About 29% of the total number of dentists in Georgia are Medicaid providers, so there are plenty of privately insured and fee-for-service patients in Georgia. This means each dentist serves more senior citizens needing denture service, and even more of the denture need is geared toward the senior citizen population.

This will impact what type of supplier you will be required:

  • Do you approve the tooth set up before final fabrication? The time required for making a complete denture may be longer than the time required for a partial denture, and problems with retention or occlusion can require even longer remakes. To reduce this risk, BestoDental distributes a design preview to the client at the set-up stage to obtain approval of the positioning of the teeth and occlusal relationships. Final fabrication is only allowed after formal confirmation. The use of this practice has considerably lowered the remake rate.
  • Have a wax try-in stage? What is the number of try-ins that are free?

Dentures & Partials

4) Type 4: Aesthetic Restorations (Veneers, Anterior Crowns)

Georgia is a very diverse state with a non-Hispanic White population of ~48.8%, Black population of ~32%, an increasing number of Hispanic/Latino, and others. In addition to the multicultural energy of the Atlanta metro, its voracious appetite, historic communities throughout the coastal plain, and increasing disposable income, it has resulted in a patient population with vastly different aesthetic preferences and a common trend: heightened demand for cosmetic-related work. Veneers, anterior all-ceramic cases, and smile design cases are more and more common in Georgia practices.

An impact on your supplier decision:

  • The difference comes in aesthetics; the lab should be able to show some natural aesthetics in the anterior cases in their portfolio, with different skin tones and different facial shapes.
  • Chair time will be saved, and predictability increased if the lab can accept intraoral scans and perform digital smile design (DSD). Patients can also get a digital veneer design service from BestoDental to confirm before being fabricated.

Questions to ask your supplier:

  • Provide a before-and-after photo gallery of anterior esthetic cases, preferably different ages and ethnicities?
  • What material systems do you use for veneers and anterior crowns (E.max, lithium disilicate, multilayer zirconia)?
  • Are you a digital smile design provider? What kind of files do you want to accept (.)?STL,.PLY, etc.)?

If you want to learn how to outsource E.max restorations, we have written a dedicated article, E.max Dental Lab Outsourcing Guide: Price, Workflow & Lab Selection.

Crown & Bridge Volume capacity + consistent turnaround Multiple material options, scalable production, clear remake policy
Implant‑Supported Restorations Precision + system compatibility Support for your implant brands, digital workflow, titanium‑base accuracy
Dentures & Partials Fit consistency + cost control Reliable denture production capacity, competitive pricing, wax try‑in process
Aesthetic Restorations Aesthetic artistry Anterior case portfolio, digital design capability, diverse material expertise

4. Lab Sourcing Options: Which One Fits Your Practice?

Dental laboratory pricing in Georgia is generally at a medium level compared to the rest of the United States. However, the state has a unique advantage—Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This gives dentists, dental practices, and dental laboratories in Georgia greater convenience when outsourcing cases than those in many other states.

Given the above circumstances, BestoDental suggests three methods for outsourcing dental prosthetics. There are pros and cons associated with each option.

1) Option 1: Local Georgia Lab – Same-State Convenience

Georgia has approximately 150 to 220 active dental laboratories. Most are small owner-operated labs and small to mid-sized local laboratories, with only a limited number of larger full-service labs. The market is mainly concentrated in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Compared with Alabama, dental laboratories in Georgia have adopted digital workflows more extensively. Many labs support digital scanning and design systems such as iTero, Medit, TRIOS, exocad, and 3Shape. Fixed restorations are the main product category, and some smaller laboratories focus primarily on crowns, bridges, and other fixed prosthetics. However, Georgia’s capabilities in implant restorations and full-arch removable prosthetics are relatively less developed, so these cases are often outsourced to laboratories in other states or overseas.

In terms of pricing, local Georgia laboratories generally charge less than high-end laboratories in California and New York, but their fees are still significantly higher than those of overseas laboratories. High-end laboratories in central Atlanta may charge prices close to the upper end of the national market and are therefore more likely to be accepted by practices in affluent northern suburbs. For an average small or mid-sized dental practice, outsourcing cases to an Atlanta laboratory may not necessarily offer greater advantages than working with an overseas laboratory.

For a clearer comparison, we reviewed the laboratory fees for several basic products in the Atlanta area and other parts of Georgia:

Product Atlanta (Large Digital Dental Labs) Other Areas of Georgia (Small & Mid-Sized Labs)
Full-Contour Zirconia Crown USD 99–143 USD 80–120
IPS e.max Crown USD 119–149 USD 110–130
PFM Crown (Non-Precious Alloy) USD 82–111 USD 65–90
Temporary Crown USD 25–55 USD 20–35
Custom Titanium Abutment USD 180–289 USD 170–250
Complete Denture (Single Arch) USD 400–900 USD 350–700
Cast Metal Partial Denture USD 550–1,100 USD 500–900

2) Option 2: Out-of-State U.S. Lab – National Scale with Domestic Reliability

Georgia is home to Atlanta, one of the world’s largest transportation and logistics hubs, making it easy to outsource cases to neighboring states without worrying about shipping. Even on a nationwide scale, overnight delivery is often available. The most common outsourcing destinations are Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, and South Carolina.

Georgia dental practices choose to outsource certain cases because some neighboring states are stronger in specific product categories and can offer lower costs. Laboratory fees typically vary by around 10–20% between states. For example, a standard full-contour zirconia crown costs around USD 110 in Atlanta, compared with approximately USD 90 in Alabama.

Taking a full-contour zirconia crown as an example, the table below compares laboratory pricing in Georgia with that of neighboring states:

State Typical Price Range (USD) Relative Price Level
Georgia 80–120 Medium
Tennessee 75–115 Medium-Low
Florida 90–140 Medium-High
North Carolina 80–125 Medium
Alabama 70–110 Low
South Carolina 75–115 Medium-Low

From the comparison above, it is clear that dental laboratory pricing in Georgia is relatively competitive, but it is still higher than in states such as Alabama. Therefore, practices looking to reduce operating costs may consider outsourcing certain cases to laboratories in neighboring states.

If you’re looking for dental laboratories in other parts of the United States, we’ve already done the research and compiled a comprehensive U.S. Dental Laboratory Directory. You can use it to find laboratories that best match your location, specialty, and service requirements.

3) Option 3: China Lab – Maximum Cost Savings with Global Scale

Outsourcing cases to China is just as convenient in terms of shipping. Fuyong, Shenzhen is home to China’s largest dental laboratory cluster and is located close to Hong Kong, providing excellent access to international air freight. Packages shipped before 12:00 noon can potentially be delivered in the United States as early as the next day. In terms of shipping efficiency, there is virtually no difference compared with outsourcing to neighboring U.S. states.

If you are considering outsourcing cases to China, please visit our “How to Send” page for detailed shipping instructions, whether you are sending physical models or digital intraoral scans.

We provide a Quick Comparison Table below:

Factor Local Georgia Lab Out-of-State US Lab China Lab
Relative cost Highest Mid-range Lowest (save 30–50%)
Turnaround (standard case) 3-5 days 4-7 days 5-7 days
Shipping time 1 days 1–2 days each way 1-2 days each way
In-person visits Possible No No
Understanding of local patient esthetics Best Moderate Varies by lab
Production capacity Small–mid Mid–large Largest
Best case type Complex anteriors, emergency repairs, same-day Routine crowns/bridges, implants High-volume routine cases, full-arch, implants, cost-sensitive

Maximum Cost Savings with Global Scale

5. Real-World Decision Scenarios: Which Sourcing Model Fits Your Georgia Practice?

Georgia dental practices do not need to choose exclusively between a local, out-of-state, or overseas laboratory. According to BestoDental’s experience, a more practical approach is to assign each laboratory a different role based on case complexity, turnaround requirements, and cost.

Let’s look at how 4 main types of businesses in Georgia can set up their lab sourcing mix, depending on their patient mix and business model.

1) Scenario 1: High-End Cosmetic or Implant Practice in North Atlanta

If your practice is located in areas north of Atlanta, such as Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, or Sandy Springs, aesthetic restorations, implant restorations, and full-mouth reconstruction cases are relatively concentrated. We recommend the following outsourcing model:

Laboratory Role Recommended Choice Suitable Cases
Primary lab Specialized Atlanta or U.S. laboratory Complex anterior aesthetics, immediate full-arch cases, chairside-supported implant cases
Secondary lab Full-service Chinese dental laboratory Routine zirconia, implant crowns, custom abutments, PMMA provisionals and standard full-arch restorations
Local backup Nearby Atlanta laboratory Emergency adjustments, same-day repairs and urgent remakes

2) Scenario 2: General Dental Practice in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area

If your practice is an independent general dental practice in the Atlanta metropolitan area, your case mix typically includes full-contour zirconia crowns, bridges, e.max restorations, implant crowns, night guards, and a small number of removable dentures. What you need most is a complete product portfolio. In this regard, Chinese dental laboratories offer a significant advantage.

Laboratory Role Recommended Choice Suitable Cases
Primary lab Full-service Chinese dental laboratory Routine fixed restorations, implant crowns, dentures and night guards
Secondary lab Georgia or neighboring-state laboratory Rush cases and cases requiring shorter domestic turnaround
Local backup Small local laboratory Repairs, relines and chairside adjustments

3) Scenario 3: Independent Practice in Augusta, Savannah, Macon or Columbus

If your practice is an independent dental practice located in one of Georgia’s mid-sized cities, your case mix is likely to consist mainly of routine crowns, bridges, single implant crowns, complete dentures, and partial dentures.

While the range of cases is relatively broad, complex aesthetic restorations and full-arch implant cases are generally less common than in Atlanta. There is no need to work with multiple local laboratories. Choosing a full-service Chinese dental laboratory as your primary supplier can simplify procurement and reduce costs, while more complex cases can be referred to specialized U.S. laboratories.

Laboratory Role Recommended Choice Suitable Cases
Primary lab Full-service Chinese dental laboratory Fixed, removable and routine implant restorations
Secondary lab Specialized out-of-state U.S. laboratory Complex implants, full-arch or difficult aesthetic cases
Local backup Nearby regional laboratory Repairs, relines and urgent physical-model cases

4) Scenario 4: Rural Georgia Family Dental Practice

If your practice is a family dental practice located in rural Georgia, case volume is usually more dispersed and mainly includes single full-contour zirconia crowns, bridges, complete dentures, partial dentures, repairs, and relines.

Local laboratory options are limited, and some practices already need to ship cases to Atlanta or other states. As a result, whether a laboratory is located within Georgia becomes less important. A long-term partnership with a full-service Chinese dental laboratory can provide a more complete product range and more stable pricing, while local laboratories can mainly handle urgent cases.

Laboratory Role Recommended Choice Suitable Cases
Primary lab Full-service Chinese dental laboratory Routine fixed restorations, complete dentures, partial dentures and implant crowns
Secondary lab Regional U.S. laboratory Time-sensitive cases and selected complex restorations
Local backup Nearest denture or repair laboratory Same-day repairs, relines and emergency adjustments

6. Georgia Dental Lab Outsourcing FAQs

Below are the questions Georgia dentists ask most often before committing to a lab outsourcing partner. BestoDental is listed here for your reference.

Q1: After learning about the options above, I am interested in outsourcing to China. How should I send my first case?

Don’t worry. If this is your first time outsourcing dental cases to China, you can begin by contacting your preferred laboratory and asking how they accept cases. Some laboratories receive STL files, while others allow you to transfer scans directly through intraoral scanning platforms such as Medit, 3Shape, and SHINING 3D. You should also confirm whether the laboratory accepts physical models.

At BestoDental, we have prepared a New Partner Guide specifically for new customers. It explains how to submit cases to our laboratory, including both digital scans and physical cases. If you are interested, please contact us customer service team to request a copy.

Q2: Which neighboring states can Georgia dental practices outsource cases to, and what shipping methods are commonly used?

Georgia dental practices commonly outsource cases to neighboring states such as Tennessee, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, and South Carolina. These states have well-established dental laboratory markets and are easily accessible through domestic logistics networks.

Most laboratories use UPS, FedEx, or USPS Priority Mail for shipping physical cases. shipments to neighboring states typically arrive within 1–2 business days.

Q3: Cost savings—how much can I actually save by outsourcing to a China lab?

The savings range from 30% to 50%, depending on the restoration type.

Product Type Georgia Local Lab China Lab Savings
Complete denture $400–$600 $150–$350 40%–50%
Partial denture $350–$500 $120–$280 40%–50%
Single zirconia crown $120–$180 $45–$80 40%–50%
Implant crown (abutment included) $400–$600 $220–$350 30%–45%

Prices above are lab fabrication fees and do not include international shipping. Shipping runs $30–$60 per order.

The average savings for a mid-sized, Georgia-based practice that is sending 60% of its restorative cases to China is about $80 per unit. That’s **$30,000–$50,000 per year** in lab cost savings. With Medicaid reimbursements for adult dental services at only 61.2% of the cost of private insurance, and only approximately 29% of Georgia dentists providing Medicaid services, those savings are right at the bottom line, and can mean the difference between a profitable Medicaid segment and a money‑losing one.

Q4: How do I manage urgent “same‑day” or next‑day cases with an overseas lab?

Overseas labs cannot offer physical same‑day delivery, but they can offer expedited fabrication (24–48 hours in‑lab) with a rush fee of 30–50% of the unit price. For true emergencies, maintain a local backup lab in Georgia—within 2‑hour courier range—that can handle same‑day or overnight cases.

Plan: identify at least two Georgia‑based labs that offer chairside‑ready restorations within 24 hours and keep their case submission protocols on file.

For overseas rush orders, use priority courier services (e.g., FedEx International Priority or UPS Worldwide Express) that guarantee next‑business‑day delivery from Atlanta to major overseas hubs. Please note, however, that customs clearance may take an additional 1-3 days; some large laboratories—such as BestoDental—will contact their freight forwarders before shipment to prepare the necessary customs clearance documents.

Q5: How should I evaluate a lab before sending my first case?

Run a trial case before committing to high volume. Send a straightforward single-unit crown and evaluate:

  • (1) turnaround time vs. promised delivery
  • (2) fit and shade accuracy
  • (3) communication responsiveness
  • (4) remake policy in action if adjustments are needed.

Q6: What should I prepare before outsourcing cases overseas?

In addition to preparing all the clinical information and case details required for fabrication, you should also have the necessary customs clearance information ready, such as your tax identification number. Other customs-related documents can usually be prepared by your dental laboratory, including commercial invoices, certificates, and statements describing the purpose of the shipment.

If your shipment is selected for customs inspection, it is important to submit the requested documents promptly and follow up with the local customs office or courier when necessary.

Please note that customs clearance is a random process and cannot be controlled by either you or the laboratory. While your laboratory can provide the required documentation and assist with the clearance process, it cannot influence customs procedures or processing times. Therefore, if a customs inspection occurs, we recommend providing the requested documents as quickly as possible and proactively following up with the local carrier or customs authorities.
